A Good News Story in the Making

There’s a lot happening right now that we can’t control. But protecting our coasts and oceans is something that we can.

From sea to sea to sea, healthy waters are key to Canadians’ wellbeing and prosperity. They support fisheries, store carbon, reduce the impacts of climate change, and protect the biodiversity that underpins food systems and cultural continuity.

In 2023, Canada helped lead a new international agreement to protect 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and waters by 2030. While important progress has been made, Canada needs to do more to reach its conservation goals at home—especially when it comes to the ocean.

The good news? There is still time for Canada to honour its commitments, protect vital habitats, and support communities for whom healthy marine ecosystems are a lifeline. And the best way to start is by releasing a fully costed, detailed Nature Strategy that lays out exactly how the country will meet its 2030 biodiversity commitments—including to protect 30 per cent of our oceans.

You can help make that happen.
